The Colonel at 9th & N Streets NW On-Track, But Falling Foul of HRPB

The Corner of 9th and N Street has transformed the neighborhood
There have been several meetings and visits over the exterior of The Colonel, the new mixed-use project at 9th and N Streets NW. The major stumble has been the use of siding on the rear, one side and on the open interior. (The approved plans called for stucco) Now this has not been contentious, the Developer understands the requirements and is addressing HRPB and the communities concerns. Blagden Alley is on the National Register of Historic Places, and as such HRPB, the ANC and BANCA must be heard when development infringes.
Red Brick and Beige Siding just do not mix in a Historic District
Last week, as part of a BANCA review, I was able to get a limited look at the interior and was surprised by the layout, which cannot be seen from the street. We entered through the entrance of what will eventually be the retail space, and followed our guide to the inner courtyard, a large, bright open space that, literally, is the center of the project. From the courtyard are the entrances to the apartments, visually less urban, more suburban.  The tour was specific to the building effect on the surrounding Alley and Street lines so my opportunities for photographs were limited......here's what I did get;
Future Retail Entrance on 9th Street
Interior of Retail Space...I could see myself eating here
Interior Courtyard, a large, bright space at the center of the project
Siding gives a definite suburbanvibe
Of course I did take a few exterior shots.....

This used to be the entrance to 'Fight Club'
Brick Facing is almost complete on N Street

There will be a lot more to come on this story, be sure to check back here as it gets closer to opening.
