Mandalay "Burmese" Restaurant at 9th and P Streets NW

Opening Delayed (kind-of) 9/13/2013
Mandalay opened as planned, but the plan was limited for a few days. Mandalay are hoping for a full opening on September 17th.
Remember, licensing was an early issue (see below) and evidently has not been fully resolved. Look forward to the 'true' opening.

Opening Today (9/8/2013)
According to the Mandalay web-site all sittings (5) are sold out for today's first (opening) day

Note: The Mandalay_DC website is up, but has no content at this time; keep checking back

Announcement: Mandalay will open on September 8th.
As reported in WCP (Young and Hungry)
"Silver Spring-based Burmese restaurant Mandalay will make its debut in Shaw on Sept. 8. Throughout that Sunday, there will be five seatings for 100 to 150 diners each in which chef Aung Myint will cook a buffet feast of old favorites and new dishes with plenty of vegetarian options for $25 a head (cash only). Guests can sign up for the seatings on Mandalay's website, at the Silver Spring location, or by emailing mandalaydcgrandopening@gmail.com."

Update 9/4/2013: Photographs
Yes! The Sign is up....always good news

So happy I took 2 pictures :)

Update 7/11/2013: Photographs
The exterior is almost complete, even some of the planting, that gives a nice "curb appeal". You have a feeling that this restaurant opening is coming very very soon.
On P Street NW, finishing touches to the outside dining area
Corner of 9th & P Streets, shrubs are in, lets hope the watering is on auto for the summer heat
9th Street, low level shrubs in place. Nice street scape.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 7/6/2013
Our friend over at Shaw Main Streets informs me that "ANC approved stipulated (temporary) license. Barring anything unforeseen, Mandalay could be open at end of July or early August." This is excellent news.
Another case of things moving fast along the 9th Street corridor. Please keep in mind this update while reading the posting below. A big thank you to Shaw Main Streets for this update.

Recently along with many other blogs we tweeted that the, much delayed, new Mandalay Restaurant would be opening in July this year. This is obviously very exciting for the Shaw neighborhood and DC foodies. So don't get to disappointed by this posting.
The fencing surrounding Mandalay has gone, but it seems a July opening has gone to!
On my "circuit" yesterday I was thrilled to see the surrounding fencing gone, and workers busily dealing with the restaurants exterior. Crossing over 9th, I noticed the Liquor License Application, and now I am a little crest-fallen. Accordingly, the Hearing Date is on September 3rd, the Protest Date is October 23rd, so all our posting anticipations seem to be off except for Jessica Sidman at Washington City Paper/Young & Hungry, who back in March reported a late October opening. Jessica looks to be on the mark.
Still, lets go ahead and take closer look at the restaurant plans. The Mandalay, are planning to have two "seatings" of 50 people each night. If you don't have a reservation or while you are waiting, there is an upstairs lounge where people can grab a drink (before or after their meals). According to the Liquor License application, there will be sidewalk seating for 25, as well as a private dining space on the third floor. Interestingly, there will be no menu. Aung Myint, son of Mandalay chef Hla Hme, who continues to be chef at Silver Spring Mandalay, will run the kitchen at the new restaurant. Myint says "he has decided to change up the concept: There will be no menu. Instead, diners will come in and specify if they are vegetarian or have any other dietary restrictions, and Myint will prepare them an eight or nine course meal using fresh ingredients that are available that day.

Myint says "he hopes to keep the price point around $30 or $40", although he admits the food approach is a bit of an experiment. "We'll try it," he says. "If it doesn't work, we can go back to our old menus."
Hours of Operation:
11am to 11pm  Sunday through Thursday
11am to 12am  Friday and Saturday

So, there you have it. Assuming no more permit problems, and business decisions on the menu, this is the story. Regardless, an exciting new restaurant in Shaw, coming in late October. The streetscape around 9th and P Streets is certainly going through a transformation, and with "City Market at O" starting to open segments around the same time it looks like the neighborhood is about to really liven up.
