A Quick Look at What is Happening in Shaw (Part One)

Walking around Shaw, 7th Street, Florida Ave and 9th Street NW, you get a real feel for Shaw's neighborhood retail growth. The 1800 block of 7th Street,  probably exemplifies the 'explosion' of small business in the area better than any other. Take Metro (or walk) to Shaw/Howard - S Street exit and just start to discover this section of Shaw. At S Street you will find the historic Wonderbread Factory and the modern Progression Place. So what is open/new and what is coming? Check it out below;

Uprising Muffin Company (1817 7th Street, NW) - Bakery cafe and bakery that will  specialize in  freshly prepared muffins, coffee, espresso drinks, sandwiches and salads. Interior work is ongoing expect a Spring opening.
FishNet (1819 7th Street, NW) - A fast casual restaurant from the former GM at Corduroy,Ferhat Yalcin, will offer fish sandwiches, fish tacos, lobster rolls, and fresh sides. FishNet already has a restaurant in College Park, MD and was featured in Washingtonian magazine's 50 Best Cheap Eats. Like its bakery neighbor (above) interior work is ongoing and expectations are for a Spring opening.

Its not only restaurants that are/have opened, Solidcore (1821 7th Street NW) brings there 2nd Gym DC location to Shaw. The other location is in Adams Morgan, it opened in November. The signage here on 7th Street says that the opening is in February, but it looks like that might slip a bit.

Next to Solidcore there is Sprint Mobile (1835-37 7th Street, NW) which has now opened its latest DC store in Shaw
Eat the Rich (1839 7th Street, NW)  An oyster bar from Derek Brown and Rappahannock Oyster Company's Travis Croxton. Eat the Rich has been making noise as a go to restraurant since its open late last year

Next door to EtR, is Southern Efficiency (1841 7th Street, NW) another recently opened restaurant, Southern Efficiency specializes in cuisine classics paired with whiskey, another restaurant brought to 7th Street by Derek Brown of The Passenger/Columbia Room fame.
Also from Derek Brown, and completing his trio of new restaurants Mockingbird Hill (1843 7th Street, NW) opened in June 2013 (and is on many must visit lists) and serves only sherry and ham.

SiTea (1847 7th Street, NW) Sunyatta Amen is bringing her successful Takoma Park eclectic tea emporium to Shaw. SiTea includes sales of Vegan food and of course teas from around the word. Word has it that SiTea will open this Winter, but expect a Spring opening.
Wanda's on 7th (1849-51 7th Street, NW) Wanda Henderson returns to 7th Street with a new Salon and Spa offering expanded services in the same space she occupied before Progression Place's development. Wanda's on 7th is working on the interior, but it seems its slow-going, so look for an opening in the Spring.

My intent at starting this post was to include what was happening north of Rhode Island Ave. but with so much happening I have had to split this into 2 parts. This post represents just one block (1800) of 7th Street.   Next up (part 2) Florida Ave and 9th Street (at U Street.)
