USTREET: JBG Breaks Ground on Mixed Use Development, adds a New Mural to U Street NW

The JBG Companies’ 13th and U groundbreaking occurred yesterday morning as well as the unveiling of the mural along the development site. The mixed-use development that will bring 129 new market-rate and affordable housing units, as well as more than 15,000 square feet of street-level retail. The 13|U development, located near the U Street/Cardozo Metro station, will be an 8-story building inspired by the city’s iconic apartment-building architecture.

The ceremony, took place onsite at 1300 U Street NW, and included remarks from JBG representatives, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Council-member Brianne Nadeau (D-Ward 1). They were joined by Mazi Mutafa,executive director of D.C.-based nonprofit Words Beats & Life, whose summer students inspired a 264-foot mural that was unveiled at the groundbreaking.

The students decided the mural needed to incorporate the rich history of U Street, its arts, buildings and people, as well as bring vibrant colors to the covered walkway it will be installed in.
