SHAW: Ribbon Cutting Roundup Celebrates 14 New Businesses, 09/30/15

14 NEW SHAW BUSINESSES HIGHLIGHTED IN SHAW RIBBON CUTTING ROUNDUP,
SEPTEMBER 30, 2015

First, there was the Shaw Ribbon Cutting Triple Play, where Mayor Vincent C. Gray cut three ribbons for new restaurants in Shaw in an hour in September 2013.

Then came the Shaw Ribbon Cutting Palooza in December 2013, when Mayor Gray cut five ribbons for new Shaw bars and restaurants in 90 minutes.

In May 2014, Mayor Gray cut seven ribbons for new Shaw businesses during the Shaw Ribbon Cutting Marathon in two hours.

In December 2014, Mayor Gray returned to Shaw for the Shaw Ribbon Cutting Spree, when a total of 17 ribbons were cut in two and one half hours.

Now Mayor Muriel E. Bowser will wield the giant golden scissors for the Shaw Ribbon Cutting Roundup on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Ribbons will be cut for 14 new and expanded businesses that have opened in 2015, starting with Calabash Tea & Tonic at 1847 7th Street, NW, which will receive a Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Grant from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.
“We’re pleased that Mayor Bowser is continuing this tradition started by Mayor Gray," said Alexander M. Padro, Executive Director of Shaw Main Streets, the commercial revitalization nonprofit serving central Shaw’s 7th and 9th Streets, NW commercial corridors. “Back in 2013, the pace of new business openings in Shaw became so steady that it was impossible to schedule individual ribbon cutting events for each business. Ever since, we've asked the mayor to do the honors a few times each year."
The Shaw Ribbon Cutting Roundup will begin with a ceremony featuring remarks from Mayor Bowser and Councilmembers and a recap of new business development in Shaw during the past year. Following the remarks, each red Grand Opening ribbon will be cut with three-foot-long golden scissors.
