VIRGINIA: Hospitality Veterans Tim Ma & Michael Amouri to Open Chase the Submarine in October 2015
Hospitality veterans Michael Amouri of popular Caffe Amouri, and husband and wife team Chef Tim Ma and Joey Hernandez of Tim Ma Restaurant Group – Water & Wall, Gather + Feast, and formerly of Maple Ave Restaurant - have announced their plans to open Chase the Submarine, an eclectic, fast casual sandwich and butcher shop in Vienna, VA in October 2015. Located in the heart of their hometown of Vienna, VA, Ma and Hernandez will open Chase the Submarine in partnership with Michael Amouri of popular neighborhood coffee shop Caffe Amouri.
Named after Ma and Hernandez’s second child and first son – Chase – Chase the Submarine is scheduled to open at 132 Church Street NW Vienna, VA in October 2015, featuring 1,600 square feet, indoor and outdoor seating for up to 30 guests – with 20 available indoors – will debut a sleek industrial design with some warmer touches, and evoke a relaxed and casual ambiance. Chase the Submarine will serve as a family-owned and operated modern deli, and eclectic sandwich and butcher shop featuring signature sandwiches inspired from a previous assortment of classic to creative sandwiches once served by Ma and Hernandez on their former popular food truck MAX. The shop will also focus on whole animal butchery, housemade pates, sweet and savory sides, will serve a selection of beer and wine, and will also offer a mini market component.
After opening local businesses around the same time in Vienna, VA, Ma, Hernandez, and Amouri struck up a relationship and began brainstorming ways that they might be able to collaborate on a culinary project for the community. After Ma began selling Amouri’s coffee at his Northern Virginia-centric restaurants, they became friends and began talking business for future projects. Chase the Submarine was an opportunity for Ma and Hernandez to bring some of their signature sandwiches back to life inspired by their time working and running their popular food truck Max, as well as some creative touches from Amouri including sandwiches slated to be named after some of his own family members. Ma added the idea of the butcher shop to the mix with the hopes of being able to not only supply the community with a solid and trusted butcher option but also to help supply Ma’s growing restaurant group in Northern Virginia and beyond.
In the weeks leading up to the October opening, Chef Tim Ma and team will be hosting a series of pop-ups offering fans a little taste of their favorite between the bread edibles. The next pop-up will take place in Vienna, VA on Sunday, September 27th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Church Street between Dominion and Mill. Ma and Amouri will be offering up a sampling of some of their signature sandwiches as well as Caffe Amouri coffee (hand pour).

“The foundation for Chase the Submarine came together because we share identical business philosophies that revolve around offering high quality product in addition to giving back to the community we both live in and proudly call home”, said Michael Amouri and Tim Ma. “Fast casual eateries are becoming extremely popular in tightknit communities for a reason, because they are fun, accessible, on point pricing-wise, offer quality and fresh products, warm friendly service, and serve as that special go-to place in the neighborhood where residents know they can pop by, grab a great sandwich, and enjoy each others company. We’re excited to bring Chase the Submarine to life on Church Street which serves as the historic heart of Vienna, VA.”
