SHAW: Upcoming "Fiber Arts" Program / Installation in Shaw and Free Individual World Poetry Slam Events in the Shaw Library
The Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library & MLK jr. Library are having a variety of events this week, starting with two free poetry events for the Individual World Poetry Slam (iWPS).
iWPS takes place Oct 7-11 and while most events have a cover charge, the library has partnered with them to host two FREE events--
Fighting Cancer with Poetry: Art Heals and Sister Outsider: A Women of Color Panel and Reading. Shaw Library is also hosting a Community Crafting event.
Fighting Cancer with Poetry: Art Heals -- Thursday, October 8th, 3pm -- Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library Meeting Room
Join Fighting Cancer with Poetry and the Individual World Poetry Slam 2015 for a workshop and showcase of the “iWrite2Fight Writing Program,” focusing on poetry as a tool for healing. This session, "Writing Your Ugly Truth," is rooted in discussion, introspection and self-exploration. Participants will interact with one another and the elements of poetry. Participants are challenged to reflect personally and write original pieces that will illustrate poetry and writing as mechanisms for both coping and healing. The event will end with an open mic. http://dclibrary.org/node/50241
Sister Outsider: A Women of Color Panel and Reading -- Friday, October 9th, 3pm -- Martin Luther King Memorial Library Great Hall
Channeling the spirit of Audre Lorde, join us on the Eve of the Justice or Else March for a necessary conversation and celebration of women of color in the Liberation Movement and the arts. Our esteemed panelists and readers will highlight the various ways they navigate spaces and celebrate themselves and each other, even as their voices and lives are often persistently silenced and erased. This panel is brought to us by the Individual World Poetry Slam and Poetry Slam Incorporated. It will be followed by a closed mic of poetry readings by women and women identifying bodies. http://dclibrary.org/node/50242
