SHAW: World Record? Maybe, 16 Ribbon Cuttings in Shaw This Saturday 28th PM

SHAW GOES FOR WORLD RECORD WITH 16 RIBBON CUTTINGS DURING SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2015

In an effort to set a world record, DC’s Shaw neighborhood will hold 16 ribbon cutting ceremonies for new small businesses in less than two hours during a full day of Small Business Saturday celebrations on November 28, 2015.

Shaw Main Streets, the commercial revitalization and historic preservation nonprofit that has been guiding the neighborhood’s revitalization since 20003, is sponsoring the world record attempt as part of the neighborhood’s observance of the nationwide Small Business Saturday event, encouraging residents and visitors alike to shop, eat and drink local.

DC At-Large Councilmembers Anita Bonds, Vincent Orange, and Elissa Silverman will join other government officials and neighbors in celebrating the Shaw retail boom. Eleven of the 16 new businesses that will be participating in the ribbon cuttings are located in four buildings, collectively known as The Shay and Atlantic Plumbing, developed by the JBG Companies at the northern end of Shaw.

The ribbon cutting event will begin with opening remarks at 12:00 PM in the lobby at the Atlantic Plumbing Apartments at 2112 8th Street, NW, followed by ribbon cuttings at:

“This will be the largest number of new businesses we’ve cut ribbons for at one time,” notes Shaw Main Streets Executive Director Alexander M. Padro. “We’ve cut 17 ribbons in one afternoon before, but those included ribbons for storefront improvements and new murals. We’re sure this will be a record.” The event is being documented for confirmation of the record by the Guinness Book of World Records.
During Small Business Saturday, Shaw bars, restaurants, retailers and service businesses will be offering special. Free Shaw Main Streets recyclable shopping bag will be available from participating businesses, while supplies last.
