“Our partnership with Preferred Hotels & Resorts will only advance our continued commitment to providing the utmost service to our guests and our community,” said David Hendrix, general manager of the Fairfax at Embassy Row.
The Fairfax at Embassy Row is a Washington DC landmark, rich with history that spans more than 90 years. Most notably, cousins of the Gore family, Colonel H. Grady Gore and his wife Jamie purchased the property in 1932 and owned it for more than 45 years. Originally from Tennessee, the colonel and his wife introduced their Southern charm to the Fairfax, especially during World War II when the hotel earned the reputation as a sanctuary for soldiers visiting D.C. when it adopted the policy of never turning away a man in uniform. The Fairfax was also home to famous political figures like Senator John McClellan, Mrs. Henry Cabot Lodge, Admiral & Mrs. Chester William Nimitz, the Bush family, and future vice president Al Gore and his family. In 1953, the hotel demonstrated its impressive entertaining abilities by hosting President Eisenhower’s post-inaugural breakfast. In the elections that followed, the Fairfax continued to mark presidential inaugurations with festivities through the Reagan years. Over time the hotel has welcomed a host of other famous faces including Jackie Kennedy, Marlon Brando, President Jimmy Carter, Margaret Thatcher, Frank Sinatra, Eve Gabor, Joe DiMaggio, and President Bill Clinton.
“The Fairfax is an independent hotel with distinguished character, classic qualities and a celebrated past” said Hendrix. “It’s a hotel that allows guests to live and breathe the most authentic Washington DC experience. We look forward to this new venture with Preferred Hotels & Resorts because it will allow us to maintain our existing identity while adopting the world-renowned independent brand.”
