WOODLEY PARK: The JBG Companies Announces Commencement of Sales for Prestigious Wardman Tower Project

The JBG Companies (JBG) and North America Sekisui House LLC (NASH) are pleased to announce the completion of a model residence and the commencement of condominium sales at the Wardman Tower, a building that is currently undergoing a complete restoration and was once home to Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Herbert Hoover, and Marlene Dietrich. The nine-story, historic building rests at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Woodley Road, NW and was originally designed by Mihran Mesrobian, also the architect of the Hay Adams Hotel and the St. Regis Hotel in Washington D.C. The Georgian Revival building, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, is cradled by 2.5 acres of manicured gardens and was restored to preserve the existing architecture and return the building to its original grandeur.
The renovation of the Wardman Tower reveals 32 rare historic two- to four-bedroom homes ranging from 2,200-4,600 square feet. Designed by New York architecture firm Deborah Berke Partners, the renovated space pays tribute to the opulence of mid-century Paris while adding an open and contemporary feel. Each residence features 6” wide oak panel flooring with a classic herringbone pattern located in the living room and gallery, and rooms are framed with crown moldings and picture windows pre-wired for automated shades. The custom Henrybuilt kitchens include coastal gray polished quartz counters and danby marble backsplashes with chrome gooseneck faucets and stainless steel sinks. The luxurious finishes continue into the bathrooms, which include custom vanities, mosaic tile floors, marble tile walls and radiant heated floors.
New features and amenities will also include private balconies, both private and common rooftop terraces with 360 degrees of monument viewing, a 2,000-square-foot state-of-the-art fitness center complete with a yoga studio, a resident library and lounge area that opens onto a private outdoor garden, private storage units and a minimum of two parking spaces per residence.
“The design of these gracious, large residences blends traditional and modern elements that respect the historic building and reflect contemporary ways of living,” says Berke. “The interiors are elegant but also provide the perfect background for any style of art or furnishings.”
Although Berke’s firm is well-versed in modern design, she pays homage to the traditional design aesthetic of the building while incorporating what has become the look and feel of 21st century Washington, with a nod to the city’s French designer, Pierre L’Enfant.
The exquisite renovation is being further complemented by the addition of the grand dame of the hospitality industry, Abigail Michaels Concierge, who will offer an unprecedented level of crème-de-la-crème assistance to residents. On call 24 hours a day, the company prides itself on going several practiced steps beyond the ordinary that includes acquiring hard-to-get theater tickets, picking up dry cleaning, making restaurant reservations and providing pet services.

One of Washington’s top landscape architecture firms, Michael Vergason Landscape Architects, is sprucing up the grounds surrounding the tower. With broad sweeps of shrubs and groundcover at the base, the planting builds upon the existing Landmarked gardens—dotted with tulips, Eleanor Roosevelt roses, peonies and mature oak trees—with maple, hickory, sweet gum, serviceberry, redbud, magnolia and London plane trees.
