SHAW: Supra Restaurant Launches Kickstarter for Custom Artwork

Supra means feast in Georgian, but it also refers to a traditional Georgian tablecloth, which co-owners Jonathan and Laura are holding here

Supra, DC’s first Georgian restaurant, set to open later this fall has just launched a kickstarter campaign. The campaign, details of which can be found here, is focused on fundraising for the restaurant’s artwork, which will feature pieces from Georgian, Russian and DC-based artists. Custom commissions include pieces from White Studio in Tbilisi (and artisans in the countryside), the Petrovka Art Studio in Moscow), and Schwa Design in Washington, DC. The owners, Jonathan and Laura Nelms, have also commissioned a Georgian street artist, Gagosh, who will paint a mural on the brick wall of the bar.
The rewards are varied, including t-shirts, Georgian alphabet post cards, khachapuri and khinkali classes, papakhi (a traditional, puffy Georgian hat, featured in the campaign’s video) and an opportunity to visit, tour and eat throughout Georgia. Check out the video for more details and an intro to the team, including the owners and Chef Malkhaz Maisashvili, former Embassy of Georgia chef, who makes some khinkali (Georgian soup dumplings) with Chef and Operations Manager Lonnie Zoeller.
